7/23/2017 Detail Day 8-10, compound and polishAs I mentioned before, I severely under estimated the time required to do a two step paint correction. I just finished, and I would say I spent about 12 hours total on the paint. Compounding was fairly straightforward, and worked well using the microfiber cutting discs and D300 compound. However, I found the thin 5" pads are difficult to use everywhere other than the hood, as almost every panel of the 986 is curved. Even the door panels have a concave curve that made using the thin pads troublesome. I think I will probably use an orange foam pad next time. As a beginner, I think the thicker pad will be more forgiving and easier to use, which will help me achieve better results. When I switched to a 3.5" orange foam pad to compound smaller sections before moving on to polishing, I found the 3.5" foam pad to be perfect for the 986. It was much, much easier to use on all of the curves, so when I switched over to the white foam pads and Menzerna SF3500 to polish, I used the 3.5" foams pads for the entire car except the hood. I did 2-3 passes at light to medium pressure, at speed 3.5 on metal and speed 3 on plastic (bumpers & mirrors). I wasn't sure if I needed to polish because the compounding left so much shine, but I am glad I followed through because the compound did leave some haze. After polishing, the paint looks like glass!
I learned a few thinks going through the paint correction process:
I am very happy to be done with this time consuming step, but the end result has made it all worth it! The compound and polish have restored the paint to 75-80% in my opinion. There are still a few big scratches I probably could have removed, but I chose to not be that aggressive. However, a lot of things I thought could not be removed disappeared, and several scratches became much less noticeable. Next I will be using Dr. Colorchip to touch up several chips, deep scratches, and the road rash on the hood! Comments are closed.
