8/12/2017 Detail Day 13-15, wax & sealantMy 2-week 986 detail is now complete. After allowing the touch-up paint to cure for 3 days, I applied a coat of Wolfgang Deep Gloss Sealant to the entire car. The sealant requires at least 12 hours to cure between coats. I applied 3 coats which took 2 days, then finished with a coat of Collinite 845 liquid wax. I applied the sealant and wax by hand using a pad grip with a 4" red foam pad. I may look into a slightly less absorbent pad to use in the future, because the pad absorbed a lot of the product, but besides that it is a straight forward application. After the product was applied I waited about 30-45 minutes then tested the hazed product with a finger to see if it had dried and was ready to be removed. Thin coats make buffing much, much easier. I recommend at least two coats to ensure full coverage, after that the effectiveness of additional coats is debatable, but I decided to apply 3 coats of sealant for long term protection, and one coat of wax to make the paint pop. I will probably apply another coat of wax in 1-2 months. I also applied one coat of sealant to the door jambs during this process.
I buffed the product off with a clean microfiber towel folded into eights. After I completed applying the sealant and wax, I used q-tips with a wax remover to clean up some of the residue left behind around a few of the seals, primarily on the hardtop and around the windshield. I also used a silicone cooking spatula/scraper wrapped in a microfiber towel to buff between panel gaps and some of the details on the bumpers. This was my first time using Collinite 845 wax, and I really liked it. It was easy to apply and remove, but requires a little extra work. The liquid wax is often chunky at room temperature, so you need to put the bottle in the sun or in a glass with hot water to make it liquid before use. Once it is liquid very little is needed, and it almost looks like soap with a few bubbles when applying it to the paint. It goes on very thin, but according to reviews online this wax is one of the best and lasts several months. I have a few odds and ends that I want to revisit and work on a little more, but nothing that needs its own post or description. I will be following up soon with a lessons learned post and pictures of the finished car! Comments are closed.
